Rugova Fact-Checking TechCamp empowers journalists and artificial intelligence experts for combating misinformation via machine learning in Western Balkans.
In an age where misinformation and fake news spread rapidly on social media, fact-checking has become an essential tool in the fight for truth and accountability. To help combat this issue, the Rugova Fact Checking Tech Camp was launched, providing journalists with the skills and knowledge of artificial intelligence and technology necessary to verify information and distinguish fact from fiction.
The Rugova Fact Checking Tech Camp is an initiative of the U.S. Alumni Tanzer Abazi, in partnership with the Albanian Cyber Association and the support of U.S. State Department through TechCamp Slovenia funds, and it is aimed at empowering journalists from the Western Balkans region to effectively fact-check news and information. o
The program gathered 34 journalists from Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Hercegovina to share experiences, common fact checking issues, identify anomalies, sources and malign actors. The workshop includes a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, including lectures, and hands-on experience with fact-checking tools and techniques.
The project is designed to promote cross-border cooperation and collaboration among regional journalists. The program provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn from experienced journalists, media experts, artificial intellegence and fact-checkers, as well as to network with their peers from other countries in the region.
At the end of the program, participants are expected to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge in their respective media organizations, and to help combat the spread of misinformation and false news stories. The program also aims to raise awareness among the general public about the importance of fact-checking and the dangers of misinformation.
